Wendy Halley is one of those rare individuals who can make a difference when no one else can, which is why, as the mother of a child with autism I am indescribably grateful for her services. Wendy Halley is one of those rare individuals who can make a difference when no one else can, which is why, as the mother of a child with autism I am indescribably grateful for her services. In the case of my son, on the mild end of the autism spectrum, he is seemingly so close to fitting in to the “typical” world--and yet, so very far. What he is missing is something that is so taken for granted that it has no name, something that the rest of us never formally learn and thus can barely teach. Yet, it is the most essential thing in the world—it is the key to connection, friendship, and love. It is not a problem that a generic prescription or an average teacher can fix. You need someone who is extraordinary: someone who has great vision, deep perception, and endless patience. Enter Wendy Halley, social skills coach…
From the first time Wendy met with my son, I knew she was special. She made that personal connection with him that is almost a miracle in itself. Since then, she has never ceased to amaze me. Beneath her gentle, warm personality is steel resolve. She takes on her clients’ challenges with a unique combination of clarity and creativity, of straight talk and empathetic understanding. She has a staggering amount of energy, a seemingly endless bag of tricks, and a passionate belief in the success of her clients which is awe inspiring and beautiful. She is their mentor, their friend, their steadfast supporter. It’s hard to be a winner without a great coach, and those lucky enough to work with Wendy get a chance for a win at this game we call life even when the cards are stacked against them.

Wendy has make such a difference in my daughter’s life as well as my own. Since Wendy has been working with her this past year on improving her social skills, she is developing and strengthening her abilities toward independence. She is learning to stand up for herself while at the same time understanding that give and take is needed in relationships with family and friends. Wendy has helped her gain self-confidence and begin to accept that she is a ‘good person.’ She looks forward to her weekly sessions and has found a good teacher, confidant and friend in Wendy. I am thankful that she has this opportunity to grow.

One of the most challenging situations a parent can face is watching their child struggle with peer relationships. We tried everything- team activities, camps, organized play dates, but due to disability my son did not pick up on social cues. It put my husband and I in the awful position of trying to tell him what he was doing wrong and feeling like we were telling him he wasn’t likable. The problem persisted into high school. Finally, after therapy and teacher conferences and everything we could imagine we found Wendy. Thank goodness!! She worked with him in a gentle but persistent way to address his areas of weakness. She used helpful worksheets that she tailored specifically to him. She also worked with me as a parent to get as much information about how others experienced him. It was quite simply put a miraculous change. He is dedicated to the work he does with her because he sees the difference. I highly recommend her to anyone of any age who has lived in the heartbreak of isolation or just feeling that you are missing something and could benefit from a little help socially.
